Best of the North Bay - A Very Brief History

Way back in the dim recesses of time (well, OK, it was 1997), the First Annual Best of the North Bay Multimedia Competition burst upon the scene. Sponsored by Macromedia and The Business Journal, the event was produced by Walt Kassoway. Twelve winners were chosen from a pool of 35 entrants. Both multimedia professionals and students were encouraged to compete, in separate categories.

The idea for BNB (as it is affectionately known) came from NBMA co-founder Luong Tam of Luong Tam Design in San Rafael. He suggested that NBMA have a showcase to honor the work of NBMA members, and students of multimedia.

In 1998, the exuberant creativity of North Bay multimedia mavens was in full flower, with more than 30 magical works on display in the Autodesk Atrium. BNB was now titled the Best of the North Bay Showcase Competition. There were four categories: Websites, CD-ROMs, film and video, and digital art. Twelve well-known educators and professionals in the multimedia field spent a Friday at the College of Marin's Indian Valley Campus Multimedia Lab, performing their judging duties.

Contrast that with the spectacular BNB 1999, produced by Michael Wanger and Sharon Callahan, in which the sheer number of entries — 149 — meant that reviewing was done by 23 judges, working in teams. A grand total of 24 new media works won awards: 2 for Best of Show, 14 Winners, and 8 Honorable Mentions. In 1999, we called it the Best of the North Bay New Media Exposition.

The BNB 2000 Competition was held on June 15 in the Atrium at Autodesk, located in San Rafael. The extravaganza was produced by Michael Wanger. There are now 12 categories in which multimedians can figuratively strut their stuff: Websites in business, education, entertainment, innovation, interface design, broadband, and other (such as personal, nonprofit, and portal); 2D and 3D digital art and animation; CD-ROM titles; video and film; sound and music; and Anything Goes.
